Roger Vergé – Portrait of a Culinary Legend by Peter Engels

A tribute in palette knife texture to the father of nouvelle cuisine.

Peter Engels, master of emotional portraiture, captured one of France’s greatest culinary icons in this textured and evocative painting of Chef Roger Vergé. Painted during the prestigious Les Étoiles de Mougins festival, this portrait is a heartfelt homage to a man who revolutionized gastronomy with joy, artistry, and light.

Roger Vergé, holder of five Michelin stars, is revered as one of the founders of nouvelle cuisine, alongside his contemporaries Paul Bocuse and Gaston Lenôtre. His restaurants — including the legendary Le Moulin de Mougins and L’Amandier — became sanctuaries for the world’s biggest film stars, from Michael Douglas to John Travolta, especially during the Cannes Film Festival. They escaped the flashbulbs to dine in the quiet elegance of Mougins.

In the portrait, Peter Engels depicts Vergé with warmth and dignity. The chef’s charismatic smile, thoughtful gaze, and unmistakable presence are rendered in thick, expressive strokes with the palette knife — Engels’ signature technique. The earthy tones and rich texture evoke the sun-drenched vibrance of southern France, echoing the ethos of Vergé’s “Cuisine du Soleil” — joyful, fresh, local.

The portrait was exhibited during the festivities in Mougins, alongside a giant bronze sculpture of Roger Vergé also created by Peter Engels, which now stands permanently in the heart of the village — a lasting honor to a culinary genius.

“Roger Vergé would have loved this,” said Engels, who met with the chef’s widow and daughter before creating the portrait. “He was passionate about food, but also about art and life. He brought lightness to everything he touched.”

As part of the tribute, a miniature sculpture by Peter Engels was awarded to the winner of the international chef contest — blending gastronomy, legacy, and fine art.

For collectors of culinary history, cultural portraiture, and textured modern classics, this one-of-a-kind painting stands as a meaningful investment — and a timeless celebration of excellence.
