Karl Lagerfeld

Karl Lagerfeld portrait painting

Artist Peter Engels met Karl Lagerfeld at The Mercer Hotel, Soho, New York. They got in a vivid conversation. “It was a magical encounter with one of the most remarkable men in fashion”, Peter Engels says. “We talked. I asked him if I could paint his Vintage Portrait. He was delighted. He let me take some photos to work from.” The following months Peter Engels made this large painting.

Later in Paris, where Peter Engels had an exhibition, they met again. Peter Engels asked him if the portrait felt like looking into a mirror. The answer Karl Lagerfeld gave him was the biggest compliment the artist could ever get: “A mirror reflects my face. This painting reflects my soul.“

The painting features on the cover of the book by German author John von Düffel: “Gespräch über Unsterblichkeit” (Conversation about immortality). Karl Lagerfeld sadly passed away in 2019.

The painting has been in exhibitions in Knokke (B), Mechelen (B), New York (US), Miami (US), Monaco, Cannes (F) and Paris (F). After his death the masterpiece resided in the beautiful bar of Hotel La Reserve, Knokke, Belgium.
