The first step before the spotlight. A moment of mastery captured in stillness.
Before stepping on stage to paint Sir Richard Branson live, Peter Engels retreated into his studio—and his discipline. He created two large preparatory studies, not just to rehearse, but to internalize the essence of Branson’s character. This is the first of those studies: an original, one-of-a-kind portrait in sepia tones, rendered in Engels’ signature palette knife technique.
The artwork shows a confident, smiling Branson in close-up, bathed in light and clarity. Painted on premium Brussels cotton canvas, the 2-meter-wide composition exudes both texture and thoughtfulness. It was born not of photo reference, but of deep reading, intuition, and insight—created shortly after Engels read one of Branson’s books. The result is a portrait that captures more than a face—it captures the mindset of a man who dares greatly.
This painting is not just a preliminary sketch—it is a collectible artwork in its own right, born from artistic pressure and personal preparation. Engels later painted Branson live in front of hundreds of press and business leaders—but this first study remains the raw, focused, and deeply intentional moment behind that public triumph.
