Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker is a large Star Wars-inspired portrait painting by Belgian artist Peter Engels, painted with his signature palette knife technique in warm sepia tones.
The painting measures 100 x 200 cm and was created as a unique one-off collector’s piece. It is hand-painted on canvas and does not exist as a photo reproduction. With its cinematic presence, textured surface and iconic subject, the work brings together film history, contemporary portraiture and the enduring mythology of Star Wars.
The inspiration for the painting came unexpectedly in Umbria, Italy. One summer evening, Peter Engels was enjoying a stone oven baked pizza with a friend at a lakeside restaurant. Only one other table was occupied. At that table sat an elderly gentleman who looked strangely familiar, quietly eating his dinner while looking at his phone.
Peter whispered to his friend: “There is the mastermind behind the Star Wars movies.”
It was George Lucas.
Without disturbing him, they continued their evening. But the seed for the painting had been planted.
Back in his atelier, Peter started to create this portrait of Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker. Painted in sepia colours with the palette knife, the work carries both the energy of cinema and the timelessness of a classical portrait.
A remarkable detail followed after the painting was finished: Mark Hamill himself liked and shared the painting.
The artwork was later auctioned to the Saber Museum in Singapore. After acquiring the Mark Hamill painting, the museum ordered two additional Star Wars-inspired portrait paintings by Peter Engels: Ewan McGregor and Alec Guinness, both portrayed as Obi-Wan Kenobi and both holding glow-in-the-dark lightsabers.
Together, the three paintings form a powerful Star Wars-inspired trilogy within Peter Engels’ portrait work: Mark Hamill, Ewan McGregor and Alec Guinness, connected by cinema, myth and light.
Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker is part of the Saber Museum collection in Singapore.
