Luciano Pavarotti

Luciano Pavarotti portrait painting by Peter Engels.
When Peter Engels tried unsuccessfully to contact opera singer Luciano Pavarotti, he decided to visit him in Modena, Italy. However, the door remained closed. His calls remained unanswered. The artist stayed in Italy and painted the Pavarotti portrait based on photographic material. When he returned home to Belgium with the finished canvas, it was sad world news that the greatest tenor of all time had died. It turned out that shortly before, Luciano Pavarotti had been hospitalized in his hometown Modena. Artist Peter Engels titled the canvas “Black ribbon on my hat”, referring to the formal custom associated with mourning. The artwork appeared in various media as the very last painted portrait of Luciano Pavarotti.
